St. Lawrence Market hours trip people up because the buildings keep different schedules. The South Market, the big brick one at 92 to 95 Front Street East, is open Tuesday to Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Mondays. The Saturday farmers market in the North building runs 5 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Sunday antique market runs 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. most weeks.

So the short version: come any day but Monday, and pick your day based on what you actually want.

St. Lawrence Market hours, building by building

There are three buildings in the complex, and only one of them is open six days a week.

South Market (92 to 95 Front Street East). This is the one you picture: two levels of food counters, butchers, fishmongers, cheese, produce and bakeries. The market’s own site counts more than 120 specialty vendors inside.

  • Tuesday to Friday: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Monday: closed

North Market. Rebuilt and reopened in 2025, with the first Saturday farmers market in the new building held on 5 April 2025. It is a five storey building now: a ground floor Market Hall, court rooms and city offices above, and four levels of underground parking. The Market Hall hosts the Saturday farmers market, the Sunday antique market and events the rest of the week.

St. Lawrence Hall. Built in 1850, a block north at King and Jarvis. Shops on the ground floor, city offices above, and the restored Great Hall on the third floor, which is a rental space rather than a drop-in attraction. Worth a look from the sidewalk on your way through.

The Saturday farmers market

Saturday is the real market day. Southern Ontario farmers set up in the North building from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the market site traces that Saturday tradition on this spot back to 1803.

Two things to know. First, 5 a.m. is not a typo, and the serious shoppers are there before 8. Second, it winds down at 3 p.m. while the South Market stays open until 5, so if you arrive at 2:30 you get the tail end of one and the full run of the other.

Saturday is also the one day the South Market opens at 7 a.m. If you want the building at its busiest and best stocked, that is your morning. If you want elbow room, it is not.

The Sunday antique market

Antiques at St. Lawrence Market runs in the North building most Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with dealers selling vintage, collectibles, jewellery, prints and furniture. The catch: it does not run on the last Sunday of the month. Check the market’s events listing before you build a Sunday around it.

Sunday is the gentlest day overall. The South Market opens at 10 a.m., the crowd is slower, and you can do antiques upstairs and lunch across the street in one loop.

What to eat in the South Market

Come hungry and walk the whole building before you commit. A few anchors:

  • The peameal bacon sandwich. Carousel Bakery on the upper level built its reputation on it, and it is the one order people travel for. Peameal is a Canadian cut of back bacon rolled in cornmeal, served on a soft bun with mustard.
  • Cheese and cured meats. Several counters on the main level will build you a picnic in five minutes.
  • Fish and oysters. The seafood counters shuck to order.
  • Bakeries. Breads, pastries and Montreal style bagels across multiple stalls.

All vendors take cash, and many take Interac or credit cards, but a few of the smallest counters are still happiest with cash. There are ATMs throughout the South Market and a TD machine at the front of the North Market.

Getting there and where to park

The market sits at Front and Jarvis, in Old Town, a flat ten minute walk east of Union Station.

  • Subway: Line 1 to Union, then walk east along Front Street. Line 1 to King works too, then walk east and south.
  • Streetcar: the 504 King streetcar stops at King and Jarvis, two blocks north of the doors. New here? Start with our TTC beginner’s guide.
  • Driving: the Green P St. Lawrence Garage is south of the South Market at Lower Jarvis Street and The Esplanade. On Saturdays, market shoppers get a special rate of $1 an hour for the first two hours, valid 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Our downtown Toronto parking guide covers the rest of the area.

The buildings are wheelchair accessible, with an elevator just inside the main doors of the South Market.

Most visitors never find it. The Market Gallery is on the second floor of the South Market at 95 Front Street East, in what was the council chamber of Toronto’s original 19th century city hall. It was boarded up for roughly 75 years before being rediscovered during renovations in the 1970s.

It is free, and open Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The current exhibition, GATHER in Toronto, runs to 29 November 2026. Some special exhibitions carry a separate fee.

That makes the market a solid stop when the weather turns, alongside the rest of our rainy day plans. It also earns its spot on the list of free things to do in Toronto, since walking through costs nothing.

How to do it in an hour

You do not need half a day.

  1. Enter the South Market from Front Street and walk the main level end to end without buying anything. Twelve minutes.
  2. Go downstairs for the lower level counters. Another ten.
  3. Head upstairs and eat. Peameal sandwich or whatever caught your eye on the first lap.
  4. If it is Wednesday to Sunday, duck into the Market Gallery before you leave.

Then keep walking. The Distillery District is fifteen minutes east, and if you want a different kind of market day entirely, our Kensington Market walking guide has the west end version.

Holiday hours and the January slowdown

The market publishes holiday hours each year. For the rest of 2026:

DateHours
Wednesday 11 November (Remembrance Day)9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Monday 21 December9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (open, unusually)
Thursday 24 December7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Friday 25 DecemberClosed
Saturday 26 DecemberClosed
Sunday 27 December10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Monday 28 DecemberClosed
Thursday 31 December8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Friday 1 January 2027Closed

One more quirk: in January, individual vendors take staggered breaks the market calls flex hours. The buildings keep their normal schedule, but specific stalls close for a week or shorten their days. If you are going in January for one particular counter, check the market’s flex hours list first.

Good to know

  • Free public Wi-Fi is available. Connect to the network named TOPublic.
  • Pets are not allowed inside the North or South Market buildings under Toronto Public Health rules.
  • Lost something? The lost and found is at the administrative office, 105 The Esplanade.
  • Saturday before 9 a.m. is the best stock and the worst parking. Tuesday morning is the opposite.
  • Bring a bag. You will buy more than you planned.

Monday aside, there is no wrong day. There is just the difference between a Saturday that is a whole event and a Tuesday that takes an hour.
