How to Get to Niagara Falls from Toronto Without a Car
No car? Get from Toronto to Niagara Falls by GO Train, the GO+WEGO combo ticket or a tour, with current prices and travel times.
Seeing Niagara Falls from Toronto without a car is easier than most people think. The train goes right there, a local bus does the rest, and the falls themselves cost nothing to see. Here’s every car-free option, ranked by simplicity.
Quick answer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Best option | GO Train plus WEGO bus |
| Combo ticket | $22 (1 day) or $35 (2 days) per adult |
| Kids | 12 and under ride GO free |
| Travel time | Roughly 2 to 2.5 hours each way |
| Runs | All year, from Union Station |
| Seeing the falls | Free |
Option 1: Niagara Falls from Toronto without a car, by GO Train and WEGO (best for most people)
Take the GO Train from Union Station to Niagara Falls GO station. GO runs Niagara service all year, and the direct trip takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours. Getting to Union is easy on the TTC; our TTC beginner’s guide covers how to tap in.
From the station, the WEGO Green Line runs along the Niagara Parkway to the falls and the Niagara Parks sights. The Blue Line covers Fallsview and Clifton Hill.
The smart buy is the GO+WEGO combo ticket: your round-trip GO fare plus unlimited WEGO rides in one package.
- 1-day package: $22 per adult
- 2-day package: $35 per adult (48 hours of WEGO)
- Kids 12 and under ride GO free
Compare it with the regular GO fare in the trip planner for your date. Once you add WEGO rides, the combo is hard to beat.
Pro tip: if no direct train fits your plans, the GO trip planner may route you on the Lakeshore West line to Burlington with a GO bus connection to Niagara Falls.
Costs at a glance
| Option | What you pay | What’s included |
|---|---|---|
| GO+WEGO 1-day | $22 per adult | Round-trip GO Train plus a WEGO day pass |
| GO+WEGO 2-day | $35 per adult | Round-trip GO Train plus 48 hours of WEGO |
| Regular GO fare | Varies by date and payment | Train only; check the trip planner |
| Day tour | Varies by company | Transport, guide, often attractions |
| VIA Rail | Varies | Train only |
Option 2: Organized day tour (easiest)
If you’d rather not think about schedules at all, day tours from Toronto bundle transport, a guide and often the big attractions (like the Niagara City Cruises boat tour or Journey Behind the Falls) into one price. Worth it if your time is tight or you want hotel pickup.
Option 3: VIA Rail
VIA Rail also runs between Toronto and Niagara Falls, but it usually costs more than GO and runs less often. Only worth a look if the GO schedule doesn’t work for you.
How to get around Niagara Falls without a car
Once you’re there, you’ve got three easy ways to move:
- WEGO Green Line: from the GO station along the Niagara Parkway, past the falls and the Niagara Parks attractions.
- WEGO Blue Line: Fallsview hotels, Clifton Hill and the tourist district.
- Your feet: the walk along the river between the main viewpoints is the best part of the day.
In season (roughly April to early October), WEGO also connects to a shuttle to Niagara-on-the-Lake.
What to do with your day
Looking at the falls is free. They sit in a public park. Paid attractions are optional extras:
- Niagara City Cruises: the boat ride into the mist at the base of the falls. Seasonal, starting in May.
- Journey Behind the Falls: tunnels about 150 feet below ground that lead to viewpoints at the foot of the falls.
- The Butterfly Conservatory and the observation towers, if you’ve got time left over.
A solid plan: arrive mid-morning, walk the Niagara Parkway between viewpoints, pick one paid attraction and catch a late-afternoon train back.
Accessibility notes
- The station: the Niagara Falls train station at 4267 Bridge Street has wheelchair access to the entrance, platform and trains. VIA Rail asks for 48 hours’ notice to use its wheelchair lift (1-888-VIA-RAIL).
- GO Transit: call GO at 1-888-438-6646 ahead of time if you need help planning an accessible trip.
- At the falls: some attractions involve stairs, tunnels or boats. Check the accessibility details for each one on the Niagara Parks site before you go.
A simple car-free day, start to finish
- Morning: ride the TTC to Union Station and catch your GO Train. Grab breakfast to eat on board.
- Late morning: arrive at Niagara Falls GO station and hop on the WEGO Green Line.
- Midday: walk the river from viewpoint to viewpoint and do your one paid attraction.
- Afternoon: eat, then take WEGO back to the station with time to spare.
- Evening: ride the train home and watch the lake go by.
Keep it to one paid attraction and the day stays relaxed, not rushed.
Staying for the evening?
The falls are lit up every night, starting around dusk, with hours that shift by season. From mid-May to mid-October, Niagara Parks also runs short nightly fireworks at 10 PM, weather permitting. If you’re staying late, check the last train back to Toronto before you settle in.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Missing the last train. Trains back to Toronto are less frequent than a subway. Know your departure time before dinner.
- Trying to do everything. One paid attraction plus a long walk beats rushing through four.
- Forgetting the season. Boat tours, fireworks and some shuttles are seasonal. In late fall and winter, plan around what’s open.
- Skipping the planner. GO schedules and routes change. A trip that was direct last month may need a transfer today.
Good to know
- Re-check the GO trip planner the morning you travel. Schedules change by season.
- The boat tours and the Falls Incline Railway are seasonal, so check before you build your day around one.
- Bring a waterproof layer. The mist near the falls soaks everything.
